Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin’s outdated land fixation
By Erik Gartzke
In the wake of the President’s phone call with Vladimir Putin, talking heads opined that Russia had out-maneuvered the White House. Trump has since adjusted his tone, expressing frustration that Putin has “gone crazy” and is “playing with fire.” Trump has also reportedly confided to European leaders that Putin is not yet ready to seek peace.
Few observers seem to recognize that Putin has already lost the war.
Moscow’s “special military operation” was supposed to last just three days. Instead, it has dragged on for over three years. The invasion was intended to be a lighting strike designed to seize control of Ukraine’s political apparatus by capturing the capital, Kyiv, in particular.
Of course, this is not what happened. Russian forces were bogged down and bloodied. In the wake of his failed attempt at usurpation, Putin settled down to a long, slow territorial slog in the east of the country, paying for every acre of Ukrainian soil in Russian blood.
