WASHINGTON, DC—Today, President Joe Biden delivered remarks announcing additional U.S. support to Ukraine. Defense Priorities Director of Grand Strategy Rajan Menon issued the following statement in response:
“President Biden today proposed $20 billion in additional military assistance to Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russian attacks on Ukraine are intensifying, which suggest that the war could be a prolonged and bloody affair.
“The U.S. should continue to support Ukraine, but that must not prevent frank assessments and discussions about the risks of escalation, not least because Vladimir Putin has threatened to use nuclear weapons. While Putin may be bluffing, it’s also possible he may act rashly in order to win a war—or at least stave off defeat—now tied to his legacy. No country, and certainly not the U.S. and its allies and Ukraine, stands to gain should the war in Ukraine spiral into a NATO-Russia conflict.”
