Trump says Putin agrees to begin talks on ending Ukraine war

Hegseth’s rejection of NATO membership for Ukraine was “welcome and long overdue,” said Jennifer Kavanagh, director of military analysis at Defense Priorities, a think tank that advocates for a foreign policy of restraint.

“The Biden administration did Kyiv a disservice by giving it false hope that this option remained on the table for so long,” she said. “Hegseth was right to rule out sending U.S. troops into Ukraine after the war, either as part of a peacekeeping or deterrent force,” Kavanagh said. “Washington would prefer a sovereign Ukraine, but the U.S. stakes are too low to justify such a deployment.”
