Trump’s overthrow of the Ayatollah won’t bring peace to the Middle East

Longtime proponents of a war on Iran have concocted the argument that the regime in Tehran is the primary source of the Middle East’s constant instability, and therefore regime change in Iran is the skeleton key for unlocking a peaceful Middle East.

The problem is this argument ignores the region’s recent history while greatly exaggerating Iran’s role and influence in the Middle East.

Although it has been involved in major regional conflicts, Iran has not initiated a war going back at least 100 years. Yet over the weekend, the U.S. and Israel launched an unprovoked attacked on Iran for the second time in less than a year.
