What the goal for talks with Iran should be

By Scott Strgacich

Over the past couple weeks, after a brief recess, delegates from Iran, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China, Russia, and Germany have resumed talks in Vienna over reviving the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or JCPOA. With the talks now reaching their “final stage” according to one negotiator, America’s re-entry into the agreement unilaterally abandoned by President Donald Trump in May of 2018 is a distinct possibility.

This caps off a tense eight rounds of discussion over ten arduous months which, at times, gave observers the impression that they may come to nothing. Despite protestations from Israel and a bipartisan chorus of disapproval from the deal’s opponents on Capitol Hill, President Joe Biden may be on the cusp a major – if imperfect – foreign policy success.
