Trump needs to end Iran war before it becomes endless
Just over two weeks into the Iran war, there appears to be no end in sight. Indeed, the conflict is spreading across the region, and the regime in Tehran remains resilient, despite the massive destruction the U.S. and Israel have inflicted.
Meanwhile, as the Trump administration realizes it cannot achieve its ill-defined objectives through air power alone, pressure and justifications for American boots on the ground will grow. Trump needs to find an off-ramp now before this becomes the latest U.S. forever war.
No U.S. intervention since World War II has had less public support in its early days than this one. Americans don’t want this war, yet they are already paying mounting costs. Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, leading to spiking gas and energy prices. The International Energy Agency says the world is facing the “largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market,” potentially pushing the U.S. and global economy into a recession.
