Is the Middle East really on the verge of a new dawn?

If you’ve listened to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lately, you might think the Middle East is at the precipice of a new, more peaceful era. The idea behind this newfound optimism is simple: because Israel and the United States dealt Iran such a hard-blow during the so-called 12-day war last month, the Iranians no longer have the capacity to cause mischief in the region or threaten Israel as they once did. Israel, the argument continues, now has a golden opportunity to shift the Middle East’s political and security landscape to its advantage.
“I think we can work out a peace between us and the entire Middle East with President Trump’s leadership, and by working together, I think we can establish a very, very broad peace that will include all our neighbors,” Netanyahu said at the White House this week.
It’s hard not to agree with at least some of this.
