Jennifer Kavanagh, director of military analysis at the Defense Priorities think tank, highlighted the “unique” nature of the war against Iran on several levels. “For the first time, the United States is in a situation where it has clearly suffered a strategic defeat with long-term consequences that it can’t just brush under the rug,” she said. “The immediate consequences, the loss of U.S. military power and the closure of the Strait of Ormuz, are obvious to everyone. The second thing that strikes me is that the administration made absolutely no effort to sell the war before it started to the American public and to Congress. Then it tried to limit available information, because it makes them look bad. But the context is totally different from 2003 and the war in Iraq, in terms of open sources, data and satellite information.”
