Defense Priorities

Brian Blankenship is a non-resident fellow at Defense Priorities and assistant professor of political science at the University of Miami.

Brian Blankenship is assistant professor of political science at the University of Miami. He holds a PhD in Political Science from Columbia University and has previously held positions at Dartmouth College and the Council on Foreign Relations.

Blankenship’s research focuses on alliance politics, U.S. foreign policy, international security, and international cooperation. He has published extensively on the conditions under which the United States is willing and able to encourage allies to assume more responsibility for their own defense, the causes and consequences of alliance reassurance, and the politics of foreign military basing. His research has appeared in a variety of academic journals, including International Studies Quarterly, Security Studies, The Journal of Conflict Resolution, International Interactions, and Comparative Political Studies. He has published in policy- and public-oriented outlets that include The Washington Quarterly, Survival, War on the Rocks, Lawfare, and The National Interest. His book, The Burden-Sharing Dilemma: Coercive Diplomacy in U.S. Alliance Politics, was published by Cornell University Press in 2023.
