When Nicolás Maduro and his wife were shaken out of their slumber by United States special operations forces on the night of 3 January, bundled onto a plane and sent to the US to stand trial on drug trafficking charges, the world awoke to the news with a mixture of shock, confusion and marvel at how impeccable the military operation turned out to be.
