Contributing Fellow

Opportunity

Defense Priorities (DEFP) is seeking Contributing Fellows to join our growing team. In this position, Contributing Fellows will play a key role in advancing realism and restraint in U.S. global affairs by conducting independent research and writing; translating complex ideas into accessible formats; and promoting our policies through op-ed writing.

The Contributing Fellow role is an opportunity for professionals interested in writing about critical issues in U.S. foreign policy to influence the conversation in Washington, DC. The ideal candidate is a thorough researcher, strategic thinker, and excellent writer who is motivated to produce written work to shape the policy landscape—particularly during breaking news events—and help correct the excesses of U.S. foreign policy over the last two decades.

Contributing Fellows will be granted flexibility and the ability to focus on multiple issues or more narrowly on areas of interest. Those selected will be interviewed and begin a 3-month trial period, after which time an informed decision will be made about a formal Contributing Fellow role at DEFP.

Responsibilities

  • Diligently follow and analyze the foreign policy news cycle and remain up-to-date on the latest trends and events

  • Recognize strong news hooks, and develop creative pitch ideas to secure high-value op-ed placements

  • Collaborate with the communications team on policy, messaging, and angles

  • Produce original, well-constructed op-eds, ideally on a tight turnaround

Qualifications

  • Strong writing and communication skills, preferably with a record of writing and thinking about U.S. foreign policy

  • Ability to synthesize information and knowledge to meet a deadline

  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Confidence to work independently—producing work on their own initiative—and collaboratively

  • Commitment to foreign policy realism/restraint

  • B.A. in political science, international affairs, or a related field preferred
