Trump, Netanyahu and a special relationship that’s on the rocks

“Ultimately, in order to get Iran to budge and reopen the Strait of Hormuz—then potentially coming to nuclear talks later—the U.S. is going to have to have a reckoning with Israel where Trump sits down and says, ‘Look, this is the way it’s going to be. You guys have to stop,’” said Rosemary Kelanic, the director of the Middle East programme at Defense Priorities, a Washington-based think tank.

“There’s a growing dissatisfaction with the idea that the U.S. taxpayer is funding the Israelis as they’re causing a lot of havoc in the region. There’s a real exhaustion with that. I do think that Trump’s outburst somewhat is a symptom of that,” Kelanic said.
