The U.S. wrecking ball returns to Munich

Experts in Washington who think about grand strategy are at a loss when it comes to Donroe. It amounts to a misguided and counterproductive U.S. attempt “to subjugate” other American states, thinks Daniel DePetris at Defense Priorities. Calling Trump’s “grab bag” of discrete whims, from bombing drug boats in the Caribbean to seizing Venezuelan oil fields, a doctrine implies a “false coherence,” adds Benjamin Friedman at the same think tank. Above all, this new U.S. focus on the Americas, which comes at the expense of all other global hotspots, is unnecessary because no country in the hemisphere poses anything close to a credible threat.
