WASHINGTON, DC—Today, Secretary Pompeo met with the Taliban delegation in Doha. Defense Priorities Policy Director Benjamin H. Friedman issued the following statement in response:
“Pompeo’s meeting with the Taliban underscores the U.S. commitment, announced on February 29, 2020, to remove all U.S. ground forces from Afghanistan by May 2021. That is a commitment the U.S. should keep.
“The exit should be orderly and deliberate, but with nothing left for the U.S. to win there, local violence or lack of progress on intra-Afghan peace should not delay progress. Leaving Afghanistan is the most important foreign policy objective of the remaining days of the Trump administration, and it should be the Biden administration’s first priority if Trump fails to remove all U.S. forces.”
