In a recent interview in the South Korean newspaper Hankyoreh, Jennifer Kavanagh, senior fellow and analyst at the US think tank Defense Priorities, referred in particular to the influence of Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby, who has previously argued that the United States should be open to South Korean proliferation. Kavanagh believes reductions in the number of U.S. troops stationed in Korea are unlikely, despite fears in Seoul. Colby’s presence in the Trump administration and emphasis on Seoul taking “more of the lead” in its own defense will likely intensify South Koreans’ fears of abandonment by the United States.
