Russia and Ukraine trade attacks as the Iran war pulls U.S. attention away
Fighting between Russia and Ukraine has left at least six people dead, according to Ukrainian state media, ahead of expected talks between the U.S. and Ukraine on ways to end Russia’s invasion.
Jennifer Kavanagh, director of military analysis at Defense Priorities, warns that the Iran war has diverted U.S. attention away from Ukraine—leaving Kyiv “facing a number of challenges” in sustaining its defensive position. As global focus shifts to the Middle East, DW asked the expert how much Russia is counting on the world’s distraction to press its attacks on Ukraine.
